Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
What is ART?
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is a type of psychotherapy that uses eye movements or other forms of brain stimulation to help people process and resolve traumatic memories. It is a relatively new form of therapy, but it has shown promising results in research studies. It has been impactful in helping many people overcome a wide range of psychological issues, including:
Anxiety
Depression
Phobias
Panic attacks
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Addictions/substance abuse
Performance anxiety
Relationship issues
Codependency
Grief
Pain management
How Does ART Work?
During ART, the therapist will ask the client to focus on a specific scene in their mind that illustrates the problem. The therapist will then guide the client through a series of eye movements followed by additional steps to assist with improving the images and body sensations that are tied to the problem. The client is always present and in control, making choices that fit for them through the entire session.
The theory behind ART is that the brain can process and resolve traumatic memories more efficiently when it is in a state of rapid eye movement (REM). By using eye movements or other forms of brain stimulation, the therapist is able to help the brain enter into a state of REM, allowing the memory to be processed and resolved more quickly.
Benefits of ART
There are several potential benefits to ART, including:
Quick results: ART is known for producing quick results, with many people experiencing significant improvements in their symptoms after just a few sessions.
Privacy: Some people have a barrier to healing their trauma because they do not want to share what they have experienced with others. With ART, you do not have to share your situation with the therapist in order to see positive results.
Can be combined with other forms of therapy: ART can be used as a standalone treatment or we can use it alongside other forms of therapy, such as talk-therapy or neurofeedback, to enhance the overall treatment plan.
No medication required: Because ART does not involve medication, it is a good option for people who do not want to take medication or are unable to take medication due to other health conditions.
Can provide lasting improvements: Many people find that the improvements they experience with ART are long-lasting, helping them to achieve lasting changes in their lives.
