A Mindful Therapist

As a counselor and psychophysiologist in Fort Worth, Texas, I specialize in helping people untangle difficult problems using strategies both ancient and modern. I chose this path because I understand what it’s like to be overwhelmed by stress and physical pain.

As a young man, I worked with a therapist who helped me learn effective strategies—from reframing my stress and increasing my locus of control to relaxation skills—to move through my challenges. As I did the work necessary to regain control over my life, I began to sense a calling towards helping others through their own tough times.

That was 28 years ago. Since then, I continue to feel privileged every time I become part of a client’s story for a chapter or two. Once they’ve mastered their tools—whether through biofeedback, neurofeedback, hypnosis or meditation—I enjoy watching them transition to their next chapter, moving forward on their own with newfound strength and freedom from anxiety, stress and insomnia.

Therapeutic Approach

All of the tools I use with clients—from the tech-ier stuff like neurofeedback and biofeedback to the older techniques like hypnosis and ancient mechanisms like meditation—are methods I use myself and deeply appreciate.

This work also allows me to exercise my nerdy side by finding creative and relevant ways to apply the latest research as I seek the best solutions to my clients’ thorny problems. Whenever possible, I really enjoy introducing selective humor to bring perspective or lighten the mood.

Education

I earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and have studied native American and traditional African cultures. This has given me perspective on how the modern culture we live in impacts most people on a daily basis.

My master’s is in social work with a concentration in biofeedback. Certified in biofeedback by the Biofeedback Certification International Alliance, I’m also a Teacher in Training with the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion.

I’ve completed extensive training in hypnosis and am a certified labyrinth facilitator. I tend to dive deeply into the approaches that I find useful and have trained with luminaries in the fields of stress management, pain management and meditation as well.

Lectures and Publications

I’m a frequent guest lecturer in psychology and business at Texas Christian University and the University of Texas at Arlington and have published work on stress management in several journals.
